Cambridge Chess Forum is more than a shop - it’s a celebration of the game of chess, its enduring appeal, and its power to connect people across generations, backgrounds, and life experiences. Based just outside the city in the village of Oakington, our store is home to a thoughtfully curated collection of chess sets, each one chosen for its craftsmanship, character, and conversation-starting quality.
We’re proud to be the only dedicated chess shop in Cambridge - and we’ve created a space (both physical and digital) where seasoned players, curious beginners, collectors, and gift-seekers can all find something special.

The idea
The idea for Cambridge Chess Forum grew out of Yofis, a creative community space, and a desire to make a lasting impact through something as simple - and powerful - as chess. That mission is championed by co-owners Ross Smith and Diane Waldron, whose combined expertise spans social enterprise, commercial strategy, and community development.
Our founders
- Ross Smith is the founder of 5asideCHESS, the social movement behind our mission. With a background in communication and outreach, Ross has spent years using chess as a tool to start conversations in schools, prisons, town centres, and public parks — wherever people are at risk of becoming disconnected from society.
- Diane Waldron brings a wealth of experience in business leadership and hospitality. Her strategic mind and calm, community-focused approach have helped shape the Chess Forum into a sustainable and purpose-driven business that still feels personal, warm, and human.
Together, Ross and Diane have built a concept rooted in values - one that doesn’t just sell chess sets, but supports real social impact with every move.
Whether you visit our store in Oakington, Cambridge or shop online, you’ll find pieces that are playful, heritage-rich, themed, or quietly beautiful - all with a shared goal: helping people slow down, connect, and rediscover the joy of play.
