Intricately hand carved Indian sandalwood and ebonised figural "Howdah" chess set circa 1950s-1970s
Intricately hand carved Indian sandalwood and ebonised figural "Howdah" chess set circa 1950s-1970s
This vintage chess set is intricately hand carved from genuine aromatic sandalwood and contrasting ebonised sandalwood. It comes complete with its original royal blue velvet presentation case which has some sun damage.
The set depicts a majestic royal procession of ceremonial beasts of war and state. The Kings and Queens are towering royal elephants and camels carrying detailed "howdahs" (ceremonial canopies). The bishops and knights are ceremonial camels and charging horses with miniature riders and the rooks are fortresses mounted on the backs of war elephants.
The pieces are in excellent vintage condition with crisp, unbroken carving lines.
The King is 3.2"
