Very rare 1890's Henry Whitty & Son, Jaques & Son of London ship's chess board and pegged pieces.
This is a very rare opportunity to acquire a full sized Henry Whitty & Son, Jaques & Son of London ship's travel set with Jaques Staunton peg pieces.
Henry Whitty & Son was a Liverpool business that operated from Basnett Street in the late 19th century. Initially they were fishing tackle makers but by 1894 they were also suppliers of games from manufacters such as Jaques of London.
The board bears the marks of both Henry Whitty & Son and Jaques & Son of London. The board does have quite a bit of wear on both the front and back and some cracks in the mahogany border. It has also been etched with the initials W.H.F which could have been the initials of a ship or maybe someone who has owned it in the intervening time.
The matching Jaques Staunton pieces have green felt bases and all of them have their pegs intact. The pieces are generally in very good condition but showing some signs of wear as can be expected of a piece of its age. White queen is missing one small piece of the coronet. They come in a mahogany lidded box which is also etched with the initials W.H.F.
Board is 15.5" including border. Each square is 1.8"
King is 90cm plus 0.7cm peg
Despite the condition of the board, this is a really special collector's piece.
